BBC Film has been the driving force behind celebrated cinema since 1990, when it was founded as the feature film-making division of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). With titles such as ‘Brideshead Revisited’, ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’, ‘Notes on a Scandal’ and ‘Billy Elliot’, BBC Film continues to enjoy award-winning success around the globe.
Working with London-based design studio, North, Syn created the new sonic identity for BBC film in 2022. Working closely with visual-partners at North, Syn was inspired by the historic archives of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Created in 1958, originally to produce incidental sounds for radio, the BBC Radiophonic developed ground-breaking work in sound effects, most famously in the ‘Doctor Who’ television series.
These analogue sounds were a source of inspiration in the creation of a modern sonic identity for the brand, reflecting on the BBC’s past whilst fearlessly looking to the future with a contemporary interpretation of classic sound design. Now opening the credits for some of cinema’s most exciting new feature films, Syn is proud to work with this iconic national institution.
